Christmas Light Installation Costs in Cambridge (2026)
Planning ranges for holiday lighting in Cambridge for the 2026 season, and why a stone house on Dickson Hill and a townhouse in north Hespeler price so differently.
These are planning estimates, not prices. They are what this kind of work commonly comes to on Cambridge houses, so you can judge a quote when you get one. The number for your house is written after a look at it or at clear photos, because roofline length, height, pitch and how the power gets there are where the time goes.
Seasonal installation
- Bungalow or small house, front roofline: typically $350–$800 installed, with commercial-grade LED supplied, takedown and storage included.
- Two-storey, front roofline and peaks: typically $600–$1,400. Steep gables, a high front peak and sloped ground push to the top of the range.
- Full outline, front and sides, with windows: typically $1,000–$2,500 depending on height and length.
- Using your own lights: typically 20–40 per cent less than the supplied price, if the strings pass the outdoor-rating and certification check.
Permanent lighting
- Installed track with addressable LED and controller: typically $25–$45 per linear foot. A front roofline and garage on a two-storey is often 80 to 150 feet, which commonly lands around $2,500–$6,000.
- A new exterior outlet or circuit, if needed: typically $200–$600, done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor with ESA notification, quoted separately.
Permanent lighting usually overtakes the cost of hiring a seasonal install after three to five seasons, and it is used year-round, not just in December.
Trees, landscape and extras
- Trunk and main-limb wrap, mature tree: typically $150–$450 per tree depending on size and wrap density.
- Evergreen or shrub lighting: typically $75–$250 per shrub or small tree.
- Wreaths and garland: typically $100–$400 for a door, porch and railings.
- Walkway lighting: typically $100–$300 for a standard front walk.
Takedown and storage alone
- Takedown of lights someone else installed: typically $150–$450.
- Labelled storage of your lights: typically $50–$150 a season.
Commercial
Storefronts commonly start around $600–$1,500 for a window and awning treatment; plazas, condominium corporations and industrial frontages are quoted after a site visit, with lifts and after-hours work priced in.
What moves the price
- Height and pitch. The biggest factor. A two-storey front gable is slower work done under fall-protection rules than a bungalow eave reached from a short ladder.
- Length lit. Linear feet of roofline, peaks and window frames.
- Power. Where the GFCI outlets are and how far the runs must travel.
- Old houses. Stone and brick houses without eavestrough on the gables need more creative fastening or landscape lighting instead.
- Timing. Late bookings in December, when roofs are icy, take longer.
What a quote should say
Which lines are lit and with what lights, whether the lights are supplied or yours, that fastening is by clips, that takedown and storage are included or not, service calls during the season, and for permanent lighting the warranty and any electrical work. HST is shown separately.
Running cost, for comparison
The electricity is the smallest part of the bill. At the Ontario Energy Board's prices for November 1, 2026, an LED roofline drawing 100 watts for five hours a night uses half a kilowatt-hour, under five cents a night at the off-peak price on GrandBridge's bill. The same roofline in old incandescent C9 bulbs can draw ten times as much, which over a six-week season is a real figure, especially on the Ultra-Low Overnight plan, whose weekday on-peak window from 4 to 9 p.m. is priced at 37.7 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to buy the lights or have them supplied each year?
Over many years, owning is usually cheaper, but you store and replace them. Having them supplied means the installer looks after storage and failures. The cost difference narrows after the first season either way.
How long before permanent lighting pays for itself?
Against a seasonal install of the same roofline, usually three to five seasons, and sooner if you would have lit for other holidays too. The quote shows both options side by side for your house.
Why is my house quoted higher than a neighbour's?
Usually height or pitch. A two-storey front gable or a sloped yard under the eave takes longer to work safely than a bungalow roofline, even if the neighbour's house is wider.
Does a December booking cost more?
It can. Late installs happen on colder, icier days and take longer, and the dates on offer are fewer. Booking in October avoids both.
Is the quote free?
Yes. Most houses are quoted from a short visit or from photos of the front and sides.
Is HST included in the ranges?
No. The planning ranges here are before tax, and quotes show HST separately.
