Permanent Roofline Lighting in Cambridge
Permanent lighting is the second half of this site because it answers the question most households ask by their third November on a ladder: why are we doing this every year.
A permanent system is a run of low-profile aluminum channel, colour-matched to your soffit or fascia, carrying individually addressable LED nodes. It is fastened to the house once and stays up. From the street in daylight it reads as a thin line of trim. At night it is whatever you tell it to be from an app: warm white over the porch and garage every evening, red and green through December, orange and purple for Hallowe'en, red and white for Canada Day, colours for Diwali, Eid, Lunar New Year, a birthday or a playoff run.
Houses it suits
- Straight vinyl or aluminum soffit. The two-storey and townhouse rooflines of north Hespeler, East Galt and the subdivisions off Franklin Boulevard and Pinebush Road. The track tucks under the soffit edge and disappears.
- Houses decorated every year. If you have hired a seasonal install for two or three years running, the arithmetic is worth a look; the cost page sets out the comparison.
- Anyone done with ladders. There is nothing to put up, nothing to take down and nothing to store.
Houses it may not suit
Galt's stone and brick houses with deep cornices, carved bargeboards and shallow or no soffit, and any house inside the Blair Village, Dickson Hill or Main Street heritage conservation districts or the proposed Galt Core district. Fastening a permanent fixture to those buildings is a question for the City's heritage staff before it is a question for an installer, and a seasonal install that leaves no trace is often the better fit.
Power and controls
Most systems run through a controller and low-voltage power supply plugged into an existing GFCI-protected exterior outlet, often the one by the garage. Where there is no outlet in a sensible place, or the system needs its own circuit, that is electrical work. ESA requires hired electrical work to be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor and reported to ESA, and the quote says whether your house needs it. The controller joins your home Wi-Fi; schedules keep running from the controller if the internet drops.
Running cost
LED nodes draw very little. A full front roofline in warm white for five hours a night uses a fraction of a kilowatt-hour. On GrandBridge's bill at the Ontario Energy Board's November 2026 prices that is under ten cents a night on Time-of-Use, and the schedule can be set to dim or switch off before the ULO on-peak window ends if you are on that plan.
In winter
Because the track sits under the soffit, it is out of the ice and snow that load a clipped roofline. It does not need to be touched between seasons; a quick check is offered each fall.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see the track in the daytime?
Barely. The channel is colour-matched to the soffit or fascia and sits tight under the edge. From the sidewalk most people take it for trim.
Does permanent lighting replace Christmas lights entirely?
For the roofline, yes. Many households still add seasonal touches such as wrapped trees, a wreath or garland at the door, which the tree and landscape service covers.
What happens if a node fails?
Individual nodes and sections can be replaced without taking the run down. Warranty terms depend on the system chosen and are set out in writing in the quote.
