Christmas Light Takedown and Storage in Cambridge

Taking lights down in a Cambridge January means working on rooflines with ice in the eavestroughs and snow on the shingles. It is the half of the job nobody wants to do themselves.

Takedown is included with every seasonal install booked through this site, and it is offered on its own for lights you hung yourself. The aim is the same either way: everything off the house without damage, nothing left behind, and next year made easier.

When

From the first week of January, on days when the roof can be reached safely. January is the iciest month at the Region's airport station, with freezing rain or drizzle on three or four days on average, and a roofline with ice in the eavestrough waits for a thaw rather than being forced. If you want the lights off sooner, say for a house listing or a renovation, a date is set in the quote. Timers can be switched off on the date you choose while the lights wait to come down.

How

  • Off clean. Clips are released, not yanked, so the eavestrough lip and shingle edges are left as they were.
  • Tested. Each run is checked and failed bulbs or damaged sections are noted for replacement before next season.
  • Labelled. Every run is coiled and tagged with where it goes: front eave left, garage peak, maple by the walk. Next year it goes straight back to the same place.
  • Stored. Installer-owned lights go into off-site storage. Your own lights can be stored by the installer or left with you in labelled bins.

Own or lease

There are two common ways to pay for the lights themselves. You can buy them on the first install, and they are yours to keep and store. Or the lights stay the installer's, and each year's price covers install, service, takedown and storage on the same cut-to-fit set. Which suits you depends on how long you expect to stay in the house and whether you have room to store them. Terms are set in the written quote; nothing renews without you being told the date and price first.

Old lights

Strings that fail the check, or old incandescent sets you are retiring, can be left with you for proper disposal. The Region of Waterloo sets the rules for what goes where, and its waste lookup is the place to check before anything goes to the curb.

Frequently asked questions

Can you take down lights someone else installed?

Yes. Takedown on its own is quoted from photos of the house, and the lights can be labelled and stored or left with you.

What if it is still icy in mid-January?

The takedown waits for a workable day. The lights are switched off on your date regardless, so nothing is left glowing into February.

Do I have to rebook every year?

No. Returning customers are offered the same slot the following fall with the price confirmed in writing before anything is booked.
