Blair was a village in its own right until it was amalgamated into Preston in 1969, four years before Cambridge itself was formed, and it is now the Blair Village heritage conservation district, designated in 2002 with a plan meant to keep it a village in character, form and function. Its older houses, mill history and treed lots along the Grand call for a lighter touch than a suburban roofline. Seasonal clip-on lighting leaves nothing behind in January, and much of the effect here comes from the landscape: wrapped trunks on old trees, lit evergreens, a wreath on the door and lanterns along the walk. Permanent lighting fastened to a building in the district is a question for the City's heritage staff before it is quoted. Lots are larger and more rural than in the city's core, so runs from the outlet are longer, and that is planned so no more than three strings are ever joined end to end.
